Our History

Rooted Deeply by Farmers

During the 1990s, agriculture, consumer tastes and nutrition all were changing…and changing rapidly. To stay ahead of the curve, peanut farmers nationwide voted to work together and unite their resources to secure a brighter future for everyone who counts on the product they grow. From this shared commitment grew the National Peanut Board in 2000.

Over the past 15 years, we have gone to work every day to remind Americans of all the reasons peanuts are perfectly powerful. Year after year, our messages have been in-step with consumer trends, from the low-cholesterol craze to the boom of nutrient-dense snacks and proteins. We've worked with celebrity chefs and national food chains to create innovative new products and menu items. We've made meaningful connections with dietitians and others in the health community to fuel discussions about the role peanuts can play in a nutritious diet. And before peanut and food allergies became top of mind, we went to work to help ensure no one with a true peanut allergy is ever hurt by the product we grow.

Since the National Peanut Board was founded, we've seen more new peanut mentions on the menus of America's top 500 restaurant chains than any other nut. And we've simply lost count of the new peanut products and innovations sweeping grocery stores. To date, we've invested more than $29 million in production research and allocated more than $21 million in food allergy research, outreach and education. But as we see it, we've just begun.

Our Values

We Believe In Peanuts

At the National Peanut Board, we value...

Sustainable agricultural practices. We care deeply about the product we nurture and the land we work. As farmers, we tread as lightly and responsibly as we can to leave a sustainable legacy for future generations.

Wholesome, USA-grown foods. Peanuts have more protein than any nut and more than 30 essential nutrients and phytonutrients. Peanuts are naturally cholesterol-free and gluten-free.

Innovation. We've seen a burst of creative peanut products and uses emerging over the past 15 years. As peanut farmers and fans, we will always champion innovation.

Wellness and fitness. We support healthful eating and solid nutrition to help athletes of all ages get the most out of their performance. We're also a trusted resource for health professionals across the country.

Food allergy solutions. We've devoted more than $21 million dollars to research, outreach and education programs aimed at preventing and managing food allergies. Visit www.peanutallergyfacts.org for more information.

Nourishment. We're committed to helping end hunger in the U.S. and abroad. Today, peanut butter in therapeutic meals is helping save thousands of lives around the world.

The peanut's possibilities. Peanuts and peanut butter are in an overwhelming majority of households and have been for generations, making peanuts the most preferred nut by Americans.
