National Peanut Board Announces RFP for Allergy Research Grants

National Peanut Board Announces RFP for Allergy Research GrantsJun 20, 2024

June 20, 2024 – ATLANTA – The National Peanut Board is embarking on a contemporary process for food allergy research funding. The request for proposals (RFP) process is now open through August 7, 2024. Up to $250,000 will be awarded in total to qualified studies designed to advance food allergy solutions. Interested applicants can find more details and submit a Letter of Inquiry here.

NPB prioritizes supporting groundbreaking research in four key areas: peanut allergy prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management. Health equity is a primary lens through which projects will be evaluated, and early-career researchers are encouraged to apply.

“We are excited to bring this RFP process to fruition,” said NPB President and CEO Ryan Lepicier. “The Board’s food allergy work has been a consistent point of pride for growers and Board members. This formalized approach reinforces NPB’s commitment to eradicating peanut allergy and will help broaden our view of the research world to support solutions that will impact the future.”

One grant recipient will be further recognized with the Dee Dee Darden Award, honoring the passionate spirit of one of NPB’s early chairmen. With bold determination, Virginia peanut farmer Darden championed the thinking that if peanuts were part of the allergy problem, then farmers would be part of the solution. Darden sought out groundbreaking allergy research for the National Peanut Board to fund, including the early work of Dr. Gideon Lack, which led to today’s early introduction guidelines for peanut allergy prevention.

Since 2001, the National Peanut Board has invested more than $36 million in food allergy outreach, education and research. NPB’s investment has contributed to landmark discoveries in peanut allergy prevention; the first FDA approvals of peanut allergy treatments; and best practices for allergy management in schools, foodservice and manufacturing.
